Why is my chimney breast damp inside?

What is a valley?
The channel where two roof slopes meet. Valleys carry a lot of water, so worn valley linings are a common source of leaks.
My chimney is no longer used — does it still need maintained?
Yes. An unused chimney is still exposed to the weather, and failed pointing or flashing can let water into the roof.
