What to do after storm damage to your roof
Storms are a fact of life in Moray, the Highlands and the Islands. If your roof has taken a hit, a calm order of events makes everything easier.
Safety first
Do not go on the roof or into the loft if there is any chance of loose material above you. Loose slates and ridge tiles can come down without warning.
If water is coming in, move belongings away from the area and catch drips in containers. If water is near electrics, switch off the affected circuit and speak to an electrician if needed.
Record the damage
From the ground, take photographs of anything visible — slipped slates, damaged ridges, debris in the garden. Photos help us understand the problem before we visit and are useful if you speak to your insurer.
Limit further damage
A small opening can let a lot of water in over the following days. Getting the roof looked at quickly usually keeps the repair smaller and simpler.
