Roof leak repair near me: how to find the source of a leak
Water often shows up a long way from where it gets in. Knowing the common entry points helps you describe the problem and helps a roofer fix the real cause, not just the stain.
Where leaks usually start
Slipped or cracked slates and tiles, failed lead flashing around chimneys and walls, worn valleys, loose ridge tiles and overflowing gutters are the usual culprits.
Water can travel along felt and timbers before it drips, so a stain on the ceiling is a clue, not the exact spot.
What you can check safely
Stay off the roof. From the ground or a window, look for gaps in the slates, a lifted ridge, debris in the gutters or staining on the chimney.
In the loft, if it is safe to go up, look for damp timbers, daylight or wet insulation, and note when the leak appears — heavy rain, wind from one direction, or melting snow.
Getting it repaired
A roofer traces the path of the water and repairs the cause, whether that is refixing slates, renewing flashing or rebedding a ridge.
