Gutter cleaning and repairs: what blocked gutters do to your home

Gutters carry every drop of water your roof sheds. When they block or leak, that water goes down the walls instead — and over time that means damp, staining and rotten timber.

What blocked gutters cause

Water spilling over the gutter soaks brickwork and render, and can find its way inside the walls.

The weight of water and debris pulls gutters out of line, so joints start to leak even after the blockage is cleared.

Damp at the wall head can rot fascia boards and the ends of the rafters the gutters are fixed to.

What a proper clear-out involves

Clearing leaves, moss and silt from the full run, not just the obvious blockage, and checking the downpipes run clear.

Checking the falls — gutters should run gently towards the downpipe — and resealing or realigning joints that leak.

How often and what it costs

Most homes benefit from a clear-out once a year, and more often where trees overhang the roof or moss washes down from the covering.

The cost depends on the size and height of the house and the access needed. We give a clear figure after a look — free and without obligation.
