Fascias and soffits: when to repair and when to replace
Fascias and soffits run along the edge of the roof, holding the gutters and closing off the rafter ends. They are easy to ignore until paint peels, boards soften or water starts getting where it should not.

What fascias and soffits do
The fascia is the board the guttering fixes to, along the lower edge of the roof. The soffit is the board underneath that closes the gap between the fascia and the wall.
Together they keep weather, birds and pests out of the roof space, and they carry the weight of the gutters when they are full of water.
Signs they need attention
Flaking paint, discoloured or soft patches on the boards, and gutters that sag or pull away from the fascia.
Damp or staining on the wall just below the roofline, and birds or wasps getting in behind the boards.
Overflowing gutters often point to a roofline problem rather than just a blockage.
Repair or replace?
A small area of damage can often be repaired or a single board renewed. Widespread rot, or boards that have been painted over many times, usually means replacement is the better long-term choice.
When fascias are replaced, it often makes sense to deal with the guttering at the same time, since it has to come off anyway.
