Winter roof checklist for Moray and the Highlands
Northern winters bring gales, frost, snow and long spells of rain. A few checks before and after the worst weather can catch problems while they are still small.
Before winter
Look from the ground for slipped slates, gaps along the ridge, cracked chimney pointing and lifted flashing.
Make sure gutters and downpipes are clear of leaves and moss so meltwater and heavy rain can drain.
After a storm or hard frost
Check for slates or tiles in the garden, lifted ridge tiles and new damp patches on ceilings. Look in the loft, if safe, for wet timbers or daylight.
Stay off the roof — icy and wet slates are dangerous.
When to call a roofer
If you spot damage, a leak, or anything that has moved, it is worth having it looked at before the next spell of bad weather.
