Roof cleaning: is it worth it?
Not every roof needs cleaning. But in damp northern weather, moss and debris can block gutters and hold water against slates and tiles — and that is when a clean is worth doing.
When roof cleaning helps
Thick moss can lift tiles, hold moisture and wash into gutters and downpipes, causing overflows that soak walls and fascias.
Clearing it, along with the gutters, removes those problems and makes it easier to spot damaged slates or tiles.
When it may not be needed
A light film of moss on a sound roof is mostly cosmetic. A roofer can tell you honestly whether cleaning is worthwhile for your roof.
How it is done
Moss is cleared carefully by hand or with suitable tools so slates and tiles are not damaged, and gutters are cleared afterwards. Where suitable, a treatment or coating can be discussed.
