Roof coating: is it worth it?
Roof coatings are often sold as a way to make an old roof look new and last longer. Before paying for one, it is worth understanding what a coating can and cannot do.

What a coating does
A coating is a layer applied over the existing roof surface. It can change how a roof looks and may add some protection to the surface.
It does not fix slipped or broken slates, failed flashing, loose ridges or rotten timbers underneath. Those need repairing properly first.
Questions to ask before you agree
Has the whole roof been inspected, and are there repairs that should be done first?
Is the coating suitable for your roof type? Natural slate roofs, for example, are generally better repaired than coated.
Could it trap moisture, and how will the roof be ventilated?
What exactly is included, and is anything charged separately?
Our honest view
